I have never been to Perth but understand it as the nexus in which all the best and heaviest Australian music spawns. It is a place lionised for its isolation, and working backwards from the sounds Perth bands tend to generate, it does in fact seem to be a place of dinosaurs and demons, the mesozoic and medieval. The debut demo of AFFIRMATIONS solidifies images of West Australian dino-demon scapes, incanting something from the void, understanding the way out is not through but from within, heeding the call and knowing you’ll be worse off in the end.

This is the most devastating demo I’ve heard since GIFT GIVER’s. It champions a similar blackened/scorched flavour of metal that still finds roots in hardcore. The distinct local brutality of GAOLED is heard throughout, although AFFIRMATIONS is a touch more on the metal side of things. I’m not one to split genre hairs in the face of such a chest-kick-throat-rip debut though. This demo is evidence of a highly productive negativity, a triumph to those who want to feel good about feeling unhappy. Temperamentally, this a crust gem insofar as orientates itself to nowhere and arrives somewhere immense in the end; mosh as dirt shower, sublimation for undiagnosed adhd.
